On this track, Olivia O'Brien describes herself struggling under the pressure. This pressure was not only created by society, but also by herself. In order to overcome this, she needs to care more for herself and eventually learn how to love herself. Along with the release of this song, Olivia O'Brien has penned an open letter about her journey of self-love, published exclusively on Ladygunn. 'Love Myself’ is the last track on the album. This is done deliberately, as Olivia reveals to Paper Magazine Love myself comes last on my album because I want people to leave feeling better than they came.[…] I almost am tricking people into listening to happy music. We start off with the saddest and most emotional songs and slowly ease the listener into ending on a happy and uplifting note. Olivia plays with the themes of anxiety and depression in this song as well. This could be because many musicians feel under pressure to follow up with a new popular song after they land a hit. This could be “i hate u, i love u” for Olivia O'Brien since it features her. The song stayed months on the charts and even placed as 10 in the billboard Hot 100 ranking at its peak. In 'Love Myself’, Olivia sings about trying to figure herself and her style out. 3 days before the release, the first teaser was released on Olivia’s twitter. January the 30th was the day the cover art was shared and one day later, a second video teaser, this time featuring the instrumental beginning of the song, was posted. So normally when I’m depressed or sad or just having even just a bad day of any kind, I’ll go home and I’ll write about it and it will make me feel better. But I wasn’t able to write for some reason, even though I was feeling sad and it was just making everything so much worse. Then I went into the session with my best friend, Drew, who I write a lot of my songs with, and then these two Swedish guys, this producer and this guitar player/writer who is just phenomenal, it was my first time meeting them and I immediately told them “I have writer’s block right now and I haven’t been able to write, I have no idea what’s gonna happen, I’ll probably want to go home and cry, so just letting you know.” Then I just started writing. I wrote the first verse first, I just wrote and I just kept writing lines and lines and lines and then we didn’t have a hook idea, I was just like “it’s coming to me, it’s coming to me, oh my God,” it was like coming out of my head. Then I’ve said like I don’t exist and then I looked at Drew and I was like what if this is the hook? What if that’s it and it’s that simple? And he was like “yeah.” Then we just wrote the rest of the song and I went home and I was so happy, I was like it’s all over, my writer’s block is done, I can go back to my life. It was really awesome and it was a great moment. I mark that day as the beginning of the new era, the beginning of everything.
